The Standard Of Manufacture Of Champagne Bottles

Although there are more than a dozen specifications for champagne bottles, the law still provides for some uniform standards to facilitate subsequent mechanized operation, such as champagne bottle height, weight, air pressure tolerance, etc.

# Bottle height

By law, the height of a 750ml standard champagne bottle is 30 cm. Simply put, the standard bottle in Bordeaux is 28.8 cm tall, and the champagne bottle is 1.2 cm taller. The height of the half-bottle is also not simply divided by two, its official height is 24.35 cm.

# Diameter

Generally, a standard champagne bottle has a maximum diameter of 8.7cm. Therefore, the foam boxes used to pack champagne are also of a special type. We also often come across irregularly shaped bottles, which can even exceed 10cm in diameter.

Some wineries want to stand out from the crowd of ordinary bottles, others want to commemorate special wines with special shapes, and some wineries have patented special bottles.

# Air pressure bearing

We all know that a bottle of champagne is about 5-6 atmospheres inside, and the average car tire has only 2-3 atmospheres inside.

Taking into account the possible temperature differences in different environments from after bottling to the consumer's table, such as the low temperature of -27°C when the bottle mouth needs to withstand when the machine removes dross, and the possible collision during transportation and handling, the law stipulates that the champagne bottle needs to be able to withstand at least 20 atmospheres.

What is the concept of 20 atmospheres? Simply put, when a human freeds to a depth of 170 meters without special equipment, the pressure is 17 atmospheres. The atmospheric pressure that champagne bottles can withstand is greater than the limits of human freediving, which is enough to prove how strong champagne bottles that have been studied by modern technology are.

# Weight

If you're a wine lover, you'll find champagne bottles much heavier than regular wine bottles. Generally speaking, the net weight of an ordinary wine bottle is about 450g, and a champagne bottle is twice as high, up to 900g! After all, only thick enough to ensure such a strong air pressure bearing.

However, with improved technology and sustainability considerations, today's champagne bottles are becoming lighter and lighter. Since 2009, some glassmakers have joined hands with vintners to launch 835g bottles, and it can be said that bottlers in Champagne represent a new height for glass bottle manufacturers worldwide.
